Afriqiyah Airways receives Airbus A319
Tuesday, 09 September 2008

Libyan carrier Afriqiyah Airways has taken delivery of its first medium-range Airbus A319.

Airbus has announced delivery of the first of three Airbus A319 aircraft to Afriqiyah Airways, an operator based in Libya.

The three aircraft are part of a delivery signed by the young airline in 2006, which also includes 11 A320s and three long-range A330-200s. In 2007, the Afriqiyah signed an additional firm contract for six A350XWB aircraft to bolster its rapidly expanding fleet.

The new A319 will be deployed from the carrier's hub in Tripoli and will operate on non-stop routes to European destinations including Paris, Brussels, Geneva, London, Rome and Amsterdam as well as 17 destinations across Africa and the Middle East.

John Leahy, chief operating officer for customers at Airbus, added: "Since Afriqiyah Airways first entered the market in 2001, this airline has experienced an impressive increase in routes and passengers.

"We are delighted to be part of that and congratulate Afriqiyah on their successful growth strategy. With the A330 and the A350 deliveries to follow, we are looking forward to a long and fruitful partnership."

Meanwhile, Dubai-based Emirates Airline signed a Letter of Intent in July for 30 Airbus A350XWB and 30 A330-300 aircraft.
