The government of Canada has confirmed that it has awarded two long-term contracts to Lockheed Martin Canada for the modernisation of its 12 Halifax Class Navy frigates.

The new deal encompasses Combat Systems Integration (CSI) Design and Build and In-Service Support elements and is valued at an estimated CAN$1.4 billion (£750 million).

It includes completely re-designing the operations room; upgrading the command and control systems; and reconfiguring the ships' mast so that it can accommodate a new radar suite.

"We are committed to supporting the Canadian Forces and determined to provide them with the best equipment available to do their jobs," affirmed Christian Paradis, minister of public works and government services Canada.

Gordon MacKay, minister of national defence and minister for the Atlantic gateway, added: "The Conservative government considers the defence of Canada's territorial waters a priority."

The Halifax Class frigates are almost two decades old and require regular upgrades and systems modernisation, particularly in marine engineering, command, control and combat systems.
