Thursday, 29 May 2008

Bahrain flag carrier Gulf Air has placed an order with Airbus for 35 single aisle and widebody aircraft.

European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has received an order from Gulf Air, the national carrier of Bahrain, for 15 A320 single aisle aircraft and 20 A330-300s.

The contract, which was signed at the recent International Berlin Air Show, will see Gulf Air more than double the number of Airbus aircraft in its fleet. Currently, the airline operates 10 A320s, six A330-200s and nine A340-300s.

"Expanding our fleet with Airbus will ensure a smooth introduction of the new aircraft into our existing fleet with the best operating economics in their class and our customers will appreciate the high levels of passenger room and comfort," said Mr Bjorn Naf, chief executive of Gulf Air.

Meanwhile KD Avia, a Russian airline, has also placed a commitment this week for the purchase of 25 A319s. The A319 is a member of Airbus A320 family, which also includes the A318, the A320 and A321

According to official figures, Airbus has sold over 6,100 Airbus A320 Family aircraft, and has delivered approximately 3,400 to 275 different customers around the world, making it the most successful jetliner in the world.
