LM awards CAE with Hawk 128 simulator contract
Tuesday, 10 June 2008

CAE has been awarded with a contract from Lockheed Martin to design and build two Hawk 128 full-mission simulators.

Lockheed Martin has awarded CAE with a contract to design and manufacture to Hawk 128 full-mission simulators (FMSs) and provide support services as part of the UK's Military Flying Training System (MFTS) programme, the company has announced.

The contract with CAE, which provides modeling and simulation technologies for the civil aviation industry and defence forces around the world, is valued at £11.8 million. Contract options for aftermarket service such as maintenance and support could bring the total contract value up to a potential £24 million.

The UK MFTS programme is a private finance initiative (PFI) led by Ascent, a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and VT Group. Ascent is to provide comprehensive training to all UK military aircrews across the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force.

"We are extremely pleased that Lockheed Martin has selected CAE for the development of the Hawk 128 synthetic training equipment," said Nic Anderson, managing director of CAE UK.

"The UK's MFTS program is a long-term PFI that will provide a number of simulation equipment opportunities over the next 25 years, so we are excited to win this competition and be involved from the outset."

The Hawk 128 is an Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) used by the UK's Armed Forces. It is a variant of the BAE Hawk jet trainer, which first flew in 1974. Still in production, the Hawk is used as either a trainer or a low-cost combat aircraft. To date, some 900 aircraft have been sold to 18 customers around the world.
