LM completes first test flight of C-5M Super Galaxy
Tuesday, 19 August 2008

Lockheed Martin has completed the first test flight of the new C-5M Super Galaxy.

Aircraft maker Lockheed Martin (LM) has successfully completed the first test flight of the C-5M Super Galaxy airlifter, as part of the C-5 modernisation programme.

The reliability enhancement and re-engining programme (RERP) aims to retrofit older Lockheed C-5 Galaxy aircraft with newer, more advanced engines, among other things.

Three modified C-5s are currently being tested by the company's flight test team. Testing included verification of performance enhancements made to the propulsion system, utilities and subsystems, flight controls, airframe and avionics systems.

"This significant milestone is yet another step in ensuring the C-5 continues supporting our customer's strategic airlift requirements for many decades," said George Shultz, vice-president of the C-5 modernisation programme at LM.

The original C-5 Galazy was developed by Lockheed and entered into service in June 1970. Currently, 33 of the strategic airlifters remain active, while 45 are held in reserve. The aircraft is one of the largest military planes ever built.
