Lockheed Martin has received a $30 million (£19.3 million) split-share competition award to deliver paveway II Laser Guided Bomb (LGB) GBU-12 kits to the US military.

LGB supplier Lockheed Martin has been handed a multi-million dollar funding award to aid it in the delivery of the Paveway II LGB GBU-12 kits.

The devices convert gravity weapons into precision-guided munitions, offering significant accuracy improvements and so decreasing risks to US and allied troops on the ground.

Each kit includes a computer control group, which serves as a front-end guidance system, in addition to an air foil group that features flight stability fins.

"Lockheed Martin is committed to providing the US government with the most cost-effective family of paveway precision-guided weapon systems available," affirmed John Pericci, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control spokesman.

He added: "We are proud to support the US Air Force and our warfighters in their defining moments."

Lockheed Martin has its headquarters in the US state of Maryland. It currently employs more than 140,000 people and reported 2007 sales of $41.9 billion.
