Manufacturing techniques can lead to cleaner aircraft
Thursday, 04 September 2008

The Society of British Aerospace Companies has published a new report examining ways the industry can reduce its impact on the environment.

The adoption of new manufacturing processes can lead to the development of cleaner and greener aircraft, a new briefing paper from the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) has concluded.

According to the report, an aircraft has four distinct phases during its 40-year product life cycle - namely design, manufacture, use and disposal - all of which are inter-dependent.

It suggested a number of ways in which manufacturers can introduce green changes in one phase without having a negative effect on any of the others.

Ian Godden, chief executive of the SBAC, said: "The aviation industry is not only producing ever-cleaner aircraft but it is doing so in an increasingly green way. Throughout the life cycle of an aircraft - from design through manufacture and use to disposal - the focus is now on delivery a reduced environmental impact."

An exhibit at the recent Farnborough International Air Show, near London, also indicated to manufacturers the ways in which an aircraft can be properly recycled to allow for most of the materials to be re-used.

Earlier this month, the SBAC called for a 'defence debate' at the forthcoming party political conferences in order to move security further up the political agenda.ADNFCR-1516-ID-18764198-ADNFCR
