Nato receives second Boeing mission simulator
Wednesday, 24 September 2008

Nato has received the second of two mission system simulators from Boeing.

The Boeing Company has announced delivery of the second mission system simulator to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato), part of a $1.32 billion (£710 million) upgrade to its 17 E-3A Airborne Warning and Control System (Awacs) aircraft.

The modeling and simulation system was delivered to Nato's Awacs operating base in Germany, and features 14 consoles on which operators can train using real-world scenarios.

Lee Strom, programme manager for Nato Awacs at Boeing, said: "This is a key milestone in the transition of the fleet to the mid-term configuration and provides Nato operators with an exact replica of what they'll see and experience on the Awacs aircraft."

Brigadier general Stephen Schmidt explained that the mission simulators are critical to the success of multinational missions, explaining that the Boeing team learned technical lessons from the first simulator - delivered in 2006 - which they were able to apply here.

Earlier this month, Boeing announced that it will be providing research and development for the various rotorcraft programmes being run by the US Army. It will look at ways to increase rotor durability and improve the design of rotary wings, among other things.ADNFCR-1516-ID-18794903-ADNFCR
