Nippon Cargo Airlines has taken delivery of the first GE CF6-80C2 engines featuring new, high-pressure turbine upgrade, General Electric has announced.
The General Electric (GE) Company has delivered the first of its newly upgraded GE CF6-80C2 engines to Nippon Cargo Airlines.
The engines, which were installed in a Boeing 747-400F aircraft, include a turbine upgrade, part of the aviation company's new Tech CF6 programme. Nippon ordered for 747-400F aircraft, each of which will be fitted with the new engine parts when they are delivered over the next nine months.
"Nippon Cargo Airlines is a long-standing CF6 customer and a launch customer for the GEnx-powered Boeing 747-8 aircraft as well," said Colleen Athans, general manager of the CF6 Project at GE.
"The Tech CF6 upgrade results from GE's continuing research and development investments and our commitment to infusing the latest technology into our existing engine lines."
GE launched the Tech CF6 programme in 2006 as part of a plan to incorporate new technology into the high-pressure turbine 9 (HPT), combustor and high-pressure compressor units. The HPT technologies that were developed are now standard on CF6-80C2 engines.
Earlier this year, GE Aviation was awarded a 15-year contract from Avianca worth more than $750 million to provide through-life support and maintenance for the CFM56-5B engines that power the airline's fleet of 50 Airbus A319s and A320s.
