Raytheon has been awarded a $54 million (£36 million) Missile Defense Agency contract to continue the design and development of a new Multiple Kill Vehicle.
Raytheon has been awarded a $54 million (£36 million) Missile Defense Agency contract to continue the design and development of a new Multiple Kill Vehicle. A $54 million contract has been awarded to Raytheon so that the company can continue the design and development of its Multiple Kill Vehicle MKV-R. The MKV-R series is comprised of several identical kill vehicles - all of which have the same capabilities and flexibility and rely on an engagement manner to communicate battlespace information to the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). "Raytheon is the only company that has designed, developed and deployed exo-atmospheric kill vehicles for the Ballistic Missile Defense System," commented Frank Wyatt, Raytheon Missile Systems vice president of Naval Weapon Systems. He continued: "This contract award establishes Raytheon as the prime contractor for the development of the MKV-R and as the systems integrator for the MKV-R payload." Each of the new kill vehicles has the ability to autonomously track and intercept threats with hit-and-kill accuracy, minimising the risk of single point failure.
