Tuesday, 04 November 2008

An advanced new aerospace industry research centre has been opened in Sheffield.

The Duke of York has opened a new £15 million state-of-the-art research factory in Sheffield.

Sponsored by Rolls-Royce, the Factory of the Future was opened at the University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), with a ceremony including leading figures from the aerospace industry,

The AMRC is a £60 million partnership between the university and Boeing that seeks to promote new and exciting research in the field of aerospace engineering and aviation materials.

At the new Factory, scientific theory and principals will be tested to solve advanced manufacturing problems in the aviation industry and promote environmentally sustainable solutions.

Commenting on the opening, the Duke of York said: "It's through this facility and others like it that we can continue to grow in the manufacturing field and make things better, make things more technological and to stay competitive with other parts of the world."

Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce celebrated the introduction of its Trent 700 engine in Asia this month, following the delivery of the first A330-300 aircraft to Kuala Lumpur-based long-hauld carrier, Air Asia X.

The airline has options for up to 15 Trent 700-powered A330-300s, which will be delivered over the next four years. ADNFCR-1516-ID-18858322-ADNFCR
