Saab proposes Gripen solution to RNAF
Tuesday, 02 September 2008

Following the submission of its proposal to the Dutch MoD, the Saab/Gripen team has revealed its plans to provide the country with 85 fighter jets.

Saab has submitted its proposal in response to the Dutch ministry of defence's (MoD) F-16 replacement programme, suggesting a contract to deliver 85 fully compliant Nato interoperable Gripen next-generation (NG) multi-role fighters aircraft to the country.

The Gripen NG is equipped with leading-edge avionic design, high-speed data processing and a state-of-the-art cockpit. The aircraft also boasts increased range and thrust thanks to its General Electric F414 Turbofan engine.

With advanced data communications, dual datalinks, satellite communications and video uplinks, it is tailored towards the increasingly net-centric operation environment that modern day fighters inhabit.

The all-inclusive proposal includes aftermarket services and support for the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) over the next 50 years.

As well as maintenance, Saab will also provide training, supply and role equipment for 85 aircraft and their corresponding aircrews, helmet-mounted displays, fuel drop tanks and electronic warfare systems.

The two-seat Gripen NG completed its maiden flight in May, 2008. Compared to the previous model Gripen, it has increased fuel capacity, a more powerful engine, increased payload capacity and upgraded avionics.
