Sikorsky flight tests X2 Technology Demonstrator
Monday, 01 September 2008

Sikorsky has successfully completed the first flight of its new aircraft.

Rotorcraft manufacturer Sikorsky has announced the successful completion of the first flight of its X2 Technology Demonstrator, putting the aircraft through its paces with hover, forward flight and turning maneuvers.

The 30-minute flight was conducted by Sikorsky's chief test pilot, Kevin Bredenbeck, at the company's facility in Horseheads, New York. It was the latest milestone in the four-year project, which set out to create a state-of-the-art counter-rotating co-axial rotor helicopter.

"Today's achievement is the result of dedicated effort by the entire X2 Technology Demonstrator programme team," said James Kagdis, manager of advanced programmes at Sikorsky.

"We look forward to expanding the flight envelope for this Demonstrator and will continue to conduct market analysis to determine the next steps for this important programme."

The prototype aircraft includes a number of innovative technologies such as fly-by-wire flight controls, hub drag reduction, active vibration control and an integrated auxiliary propulsion system.

Last month, Sikorsky announced the sale of four S-76D helicopters to Falcon Aviation Services, a provider of helicopter charter and maintenance services in the United Arab Emirates.
