The US navy has ordered new outer wings for its fleet of P-3 aircraft.
Aircraft defence contractor L-3 Communications has won a contract worth $60.6 million (£34.2 million) to manufacture and fit new outer wings for the US navy's fleet of P-3 aircraft.
Under the terms of the contract, L-3 will produce four sets of wings for the navy, which will extend the life of its P-3 maritime patrol and surveillance fleet.
Using the latest P-3 parts and materials for improved fatigue- and corrosion-resistance, the company will produce the most advanced wing configuration available.
"Producing new wings for the US navy further demonstrates our P-3 expertise, which includes airframe and wing refurbishment, in addition to full mission systems development and integration," said Mike Holmes, vice president of federal programmes for L-3 Integrated Systems.
Last month, Boeing announced that it has completed final assembly on the first P-8A Poseidon - an anti-submarine warfare and electronic intelligence aircraft based on the commercial 737-800 that is being developed for the navy.
